Watch out girls...Connor is officially 16!

Connor reached a significant milestone in his life last Sunday - his 16th birthday. We were watching the Blue Angels that day in Idaho, so he celebrated later in the week by taking a bunch of friends to go indoor bodysurfing at Flowrider in Ogden. Because of limited car space, Zach and I shuttled the group to the Front Runner train station downtown, bought them roundtrip tickets to Ogden, and sent them on their way. Zach had to go back to work so I drove on the freeway to meet them at the Ogden station. Among the group were brothers Alex and Mitch Clawson, brothers Hudson and Parker Smith, Josie Jaramillo, Connor and Emmy. Cousins Spencer and Maddie Blake also met us at Flowrider.

Emmy's 2nd time so she knew what she was doing...

Maddie (16-year-old cousin who recently moved to LA)

Spencer (18-year-old cousin who has definitely done this before - and even done the real thing recently in LA)

Back at home, we ate pizza and had chocolate satin pie from Marie Callendar's, Connor's favorite. The kids watched "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" after which just the boys stayed for a sleepover that night and well into the next day. It was a great day, according to my boy.

As for dating and driving - no worries. Connor doesn't "feel responsible enough" to get behind the wheel (how can a parent argue with that?) so he hasn't even bothered to go get his learners permit which he could have had for a year now. My theory is he just doesn't want to crack the drivers handbook and do some actual studying and is perfectly content having his mom be his taxi driver. We'll see how contented he is with that scenario when he wants to start dating!

Blue Angels / Idaho Falls

Ever since Zach found out that the Blue Angels would be flying at the air show in Idaho Falls a few months ago, a family trip up north has been in the works. Apparently the Blue Angels don't normally fly in our part of the country so this was a must-see for my 2 airplane enthusiasts. The rest of us were along for the ride.

Simon was excited to see several FedEx airplanes at the show. For some reason, he really likes "purple orange" planes, how he interprets the FedEx logo. He says he wants to be a purple orange pilot when he grows up.

Sitting in the Apache helicopter

The show opened with a fly-by of the stealth bomber, officially called the B2 Spirit. That is a COOL plane to see coming right at you. It is almost completely flat except for the little bubble of the cockpit, so coming at you it could totally be mistaken for a flying saucer. It is a very quiet plane on approach, but once it passes you, the sound of the jets is audible just like any other plane.

After watching a few different airplanes perform, we anxiously awaited the Blue Angels performance. We had been at the airport since 8:30 and it was now 2:00ish. Simon needed to use the bathroom before it started so off he and I went to stand in a long line for that adventure. When we finally got our turn, we stepped inside the port-a-potty and I Accidentally.Shut.The.Door.On.His.Thumb. It was one of those delayed reactions for the pain to hit him, but when it did, you could tell he was in a LOT of pain. And it looked really bad. Like I didn't know if his finger was broken or if he would need stitches. I had a huge amount of guilt for being the one to cause the injury, so he and I were both sobbing by the time I got him to the First Aid tent. Luckily Emmy was there and able to describe what happened because I couldn't talk through my blubbering. They just washed it off and bandaged it up, but didn't give me any idea if it needed further medical attention. So that cut our day at the air show short, just short of seeing the Blue Angels. It was a sad ending. I cried every time I looked at his thumb the rest of the day.

We went back to the hotel to let him sleep. Connor and Emmy happily went swimming after the long hot day on the airport tarmac, and Zach and I watched the Blue Angels fly around the city from our balcony which was actually a great view, not as good as at the airport, but a nice second. Zach wanted to cut our trip short and just head home. The thumb incident was actually the third injury for Simon in a single day, it being the worst by far, but Zach thought that we were tempting fate to stay any longer. The older kids and I rallied for us staying since the hotel was paid for and we really wanted to end the trip on a good note and not a bad one. We ended up staying another day which was a great thing because Simon's finger seemed to be okay as long as he babied it. We planned on seeing our doctor as soon as we got back, but continued our trip for another day.

The air show was still going on, and the Blue Angels were going to perform again, but we decided to watch the show from a grassy, shady park just outside of the airport for free. It was literally right on the other side of the runway so we got just as good of a show minus the music and monologue you get inside the airport. When the jets flew right over us, the sound was defeaning which ended up scaring Simon so he watched from inside our van. The rest of us got a kick out of it whenever they flew over us. We were so glad that we stayed that extra day to accomplish what we went there for in the first place.

***NOTE - Simon's thumb is healing nicely. It's not broken, just lost a thick layer of skin on the fingerprint surface. And he will probably lose his thumbnail in the next few weeks.

My Childhood Home

A quick apology to those of you who also read my sisters' blogs. Sometimes you get to read posts in triplicate because we tend to copy each other, especially when the post applies to our childhood. Case in point: Erin is currently staying at my mom's house while visiting Utah friends and family for a few days. I briefly saw her the other day and she was so excited to tell me about a blog post she was thinking of writing about our childhood home and the wonderful atmosphere our mom created for us growing up as well as for her grandchildren. Here it is...

My Childhood Home

I'm writing this post from my phone in the car. We are headed to Idaho Falls to an air show featuring the Blue Angels this weekend. Road trips bring out the worst in Simon these days. He is currently screaming and none of us can figure out what he wants. He needs sleep but it isn't happening yet. I will post pictures when I get back. Have a great holiday weekend everyone!

Shhh! It's a Cecret Lake (pronounced secret)!

I took the kids on a hike today up in Albion Basin. I've been there once before two years ago with just Emmy and Simon, but Emmy was sick with pneumonia unbeknownst to us at the time and we had to turn back early because she couldn't make it very far. So today we packed lunches and headed up into the great outdoors for what turned out to be a fabulous hike. It is about a mile hike and some of the terrain was pretty rocky so it was tricky for little Simon, but he made it and we had a great little lunch at the lakeside sitting on a big rock. We missed Daddy but I think he was totally okay missing out on the adventure. For anyone who is thinking of doing this hike, the next week will probably be the best time for the renowned wildflowers. There were some today, but I think they will go nuts next week. Take your camera!

Yes, I'm wearing a skirt. But like I had to explain to Emmy, it's a RECREATIONAL skirt meant for hiking. I bought it from REI so that proves it!

Connor and Emmy threw this big railroad tie into the lake. How does a railroad tie get up there in the first place?

Simon is always prepared to be a superhero at a moment's notice.

MMMMM... Pringles!

The only thing missing here is Edward and Bella...

YMAD 5K

Last weekend, my sis-in-law Adri and I decided to do another 5K since we enjoyed the Murray one so much. I'm not sure if enjoy is the right word, but it is definitely a good feeling - AFTER. She looked online and found one that was near her house and not a lot of money so we decided to do it at the last minute. It was a fundraiser for an organization called YMAD - Youth Making A Difference. They do a year-long leadership program for teenagers culminating in a trip to India for 2 weeks to do charity work at orphanages. When they kids come back home, they are supposed to do a project in their own community with the skills they have learned over the year. Pretty cool - but we were only there to run. And apparently we were the only 2 people there who aren't a part of this organization/family. It was a very small race, to say the least. To give you an idea, our race numbers were #1 and #2. Out of a total of 18 runners. I was really excited because for the first time, I had Zach and Simon coming to cheer us on at the finish line. Only problem was that it was really hot (like 85 degrees by 8:30 a.m.) and the first half of the race was generally uphill which took all of my energy. So it wasn't my best race - had to walk a little bit - but I finished (behind Adri as usual) and survived. The next race we are thinking about doing is in August at midnight so the heat shouldn't be a problem!

Then and now

18 years ago I was headed off to Brigham Young University to experience dorm life in Helaman Halls. I wasn't living with anyone I knew but that didn't matter - I was SO excited. I did know her name was Karen Nunnally and she was from L.A. First impression - she was tan, tall, had the most muscular legs I had seen on a girl my age AND she was beautiful! So many reason to hate her, but the opposite happened. We hit it off, and had some really great times along with all of the other girls on our floor. Karen has visited me every few years as she and her husband went to dental school back east, had 4 kids and settled in Washington. Last weekend she was able to stay with us for a few days on a long layover. She and I were able to play some early morning tennis, go shopping for hours (Emmy happily came along), eat out several times and watch chick flicks. I even help her set up a blog so that I can see more of her family than I do now. HOPEFULLY she will keep it up! Here's a little then and now pictures for your viewing pleasure...

A Long Awaited Camping Trip

It's been 13 years since our family last camped. Connor was just 2 and it was just an overnighter up one of the Cottonwood canyons. He's been asking to go every year since, but for some reason we just never made it work. Well, the reason is that Zach didn't have the desire to. I don't blame him - it's a lot of work. I found that out last weekend when we finally organized ourselves enough to go up for a night with all of Zach's family and a couple of his sisters' boyfriends who luckily had extra tents and gear for all 21 of us.

My father-in-law, brother-in-law and Connor decided to go up a day early to a little lake high in the Uintahs called Lake Chepeta. No facilities to speak of, but great fishing which is what we were going for. They set up a killer camp, or at least I'm assuming it was killer. I'll never know for sure because shortly before we arrived the next day, they called us to say that there was SNOW coming down. This was after we had spent 3 hours on the road getting there. So they broke down camp while we went on back towards Salt Lake hoping to find another area that would fit us all - on a holiday weekend that is usually booked way in advance. Just before Heber when we were about to give up, Zach took a chance on a little dirt road with a sign that said Currant Creek. Audrey's boyfriend Josh had actually been there before hunting elk so we knew it had some promise. We drove and drove and drove on washboard dirt roads until finally a little reservoir came into view and blessed campgrounds with *bathrooms* much to the delight of all the women. They had room for us and we took it. Since Connor and the other men were about 2 hours behind us and we were out of cell phone range, Zach had to book it back to the main highway to try and catch before they missed the turnoff.

From there, we all set up camp, started the fire, got dinner going in the dutch ovens, and finally headed down to the lake for a little fishing. Adri was the only one that night to catch anything, but the kids were all happy to be trying it, most for the first time. All of my kids got new poles for this trip, and I'm glad they at least got to use them.

The two man tent that Zach, Simon and I shared - seriously like sardines in a can but we were warm! I slept in 2 pairs of pants, 2 fleece jackets plus clothing underneath, 2 pairs of socks. Simon did wake up once in the middle of the night and was crying unconsolably for no reason, but it didn't last long. Connor got a tent all to himself.

All the little giggly girl cousins shared this 6 man tent, dubbed "The Hilton" by Zach because it was so roomy compared to our humble abode. They even decorated it with wildflowers and hung stuffed animals from the ceiling.

The men prepared the food, and it was SOOO good. It was called Wicked Chicken and I think I will be sad if I ever have to camp without it.

Zach and Simon roasting hot dogs over the coals

Me with my handsome almost-16-year-old boy

Brotherly love... it doesn't happen very often because Simon usually kicks and hits to get away so I have to catch it when it lasts longer than a second.

Profile shots - I can't decide if they resemble eachother anymore?

Zach and his mom - he is the oldest of the family and her first baby boy.

Rocky, Chris' boxer. He just had his ears clipped and this is how they set them to heal so that they have that pointy look. Thought that was how boxers' ears were naturally? Nope.

My father-in-law, tuckered out after setting up one camp, tearing it down in the snow, and setting up another.

The twins - Audrey and Adri (sounds SO weird to say it in that order because they were born in the other order and that's how it's always said)

Simon and I found some charcoal to decorate this big rock with...

When I read this to him, he said, "but I love Grandma!" (thought you'd like that, Mom!)

I took the kids to D.I. (thrift store) to pick out some camping boots that they could get muddy and gross. This is what my little fashionista chose...

Lil' Em Rose fishing for the first time. Good thing she didn't catch a fish because I don't think she could have handled holding it let alone gutting it and DEFINITELY not eating it.

Zach helped Simon cast his line a couple of times, and Simon took the reeling in very seriously until he saw rocks along the shore and then throwing rocks became what it was all about.

Poor Josh brought his pole but I don't know if he actually ever got to use it because he was the fishing instructor for all of the kids and spent the whole time tying hooks and lures and bait.

And I didn't get a good picture of my brother-in-law Aaron, but he is to credit for this whole trip taking place. He pretty much organized it and made it happen. I'm so glad he did. Now let's hope it isn't another 13 years before our next trip. I'm actually hoping for another one this summer, but I don't think Zach is on the same page. We'll see!
